WORKSHOP

Acts of Rebellion & Resistance (Sonnets and Slavery – Poetry and Pottery)

Join Devon-based Artist/Ceramist Lili John for an interactive, hands-on creative writing and pottery workshop as we celebrate Black History Month. During this workshop, we will explore some of Poltimore House history in relation to the abolition of slavery movement and we’ll meet Dave Drake a man who was born into slavery. Dave lived and worked in South Carolina as a Master Potter and Poet and he became a free man after the American Civil War in 1865. His place in history is well documented and we will take a look at his work and discuss why it is so important to the here and now.

As we explore our own thoughts around uncomfortable histories we’ll create poetry and unique items of pottery that will be kiln fired and returned to the venue for you to collect or it will be posted directly to you 10-14 days after the workshop.

Lili John is a mixed heritage Artist & Ceramist who is based in Totnes, Devon. Lili’s unique work which sells across the globe is influenced by her dual heritage of Welsh and Ghanaian.
