DESCRIPTION:It’s a bug’s life at Poltimore and we want to share it ! Come and explore these fascinating little creatures with our bee hives\, ant hotels\, mini trails and indoor activities with your little people.   National Insect Week is a celebration of the ‘little things that run the world’. This week-long celebration of minibeasts aims to quell the fear of insects to help people around the world understand their importance and role in our ecosystem. Who knew dragonflies have been on earth for 300 million years\, or that a caterpillars have 12 eyes!! There’s so much to share and explore ! \nPlease note that  Poltimore House and |Grounds are currently not open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but we would love to see you between 10.00 and 3.30 during the rest of the week.

We are really lucky to have Martinsfield (local organic farm at Broadclyst) supplying both Branches Cafe and the farm shop.  This is farming at its very best with both organic and good husbandry to ensure scrumptious food that is good and wholesome. \nIf you love your food\, then this is a must!

DESCRIPTION:Free Craft Activities and Free Face Painting.\nChildren have always been a big part of Poltimore’s history; with 2 schools – Poltimore College for Girls and then Dover College for Boys for the duration of WW2  and thereafter a maternity ward!  So\, we’d like to include children in this historic event and have some free craft activities in Branches Cafe available from 8 – 11 May. We also have Union Jack face painting on Sunday 11 May from 11am – 3 pm and we have our first Lazy Sunday Live Music session with the super talented J J Wilde. DESCRIPTION:A Weekend of Historic Celebration – Dover College . \nPoltimore House and Grounds became the wartime home for Dover College and is fondly remembered by many pupils. The boys formed the Home Guard and enjoyed many ‘squirmishes’ with neighbouring Bradninch Company\, Silverton and Broadclyst platoons.  There are some wonderful and poignant memories from the pupils and staff which will be availalble to read at Branches Cafe throughout the remembrance celebration. \n“Do not forget Poltimore.  It was a good place and served us well in hard times and\, to some\, it is the only Dover College they have known.”  (The Devonian Editorial Summer 1945) \nCome and explore Poltimore’s WWII History with our VE DAY 80th Celebration at Branches Cafe with history and shared  memories from Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 May 2025.

SUMMARY:The Handkerchief Tree Celebration
DESCRIPTION:You don’t need to be a Dendrophile to love our Handkerchief Tree.\nWe’ve got some pretty fabulous trees at Poltimore House and Grounds – and this tree is no shrinking violet.  The ‘Davidia Involucrata is considered a rare tree species.  It is known for its distinctive white ‘handkerchief -like bracts which are just beginning to emerge on our tree and is much regarded as a symbol of peace and remembrance.  The gorgeous flowers last about 3 weeks so make sure you plan a stroll around our beautiful grounds and see for yourself the famous ‘hanky’ tree planted in 1950. \nWe love this tree so much that in 2024 we’ve commissioned a local artist Min Sonia Kong from Plymouth University and you can see her beautiful artwork on a selection of stunning products including mugs\, mouse mats and pens.  All available in Branches Cafe with all proceeds going to the Poltimore House Trust. .
